Moving to Huntsville? Start with the numbers, not the brochures.

Five tools built on real data — Census figures, live road-network commute times, official school zones — plus the local detail that decides where you actually live: which district serves your parcel, what a 20-minute drive to Gate 9 costs, and what your rent buys here.

$1,283median gross rent / month (ACS 2024)
$1,405median property tax paid, mortgaged homes — vs $7,403 in Austin

The four questions that decide a move

Each of these is answered from a primary source rather than a rule of thumb: the Census, the county's own rate schedule, the Chamber's employer list, and the police department's annual report.

What will rent cost me?

Median rent for the city, the metro and every surrounding county — with the costs a listing leaves out and the point at which buying wins.

What will the tax bill be?

Who actually employs people here?

All 51 entries on the Chamber's 2026 list, grouped by sector, with the three commutes that decide where you live.

Is it safe?

Why people move here

Huntsville is a defence, space and engineering city first and a lifestyle city second, and that shapes the relocation entirely. Redstone Arsenal and NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center anchor the north and west; Cummings Research Park is the second-largest research park in the country; Mazda Toyota Manufacturing sits out in Limestone County. That means:

  • Your commute matters more than your neighbourhood reputation. Living on the wrong side of the mountain adds half an hour each way.
  • School zones do not follow mailing addresses. An unincorporated Madison County address can carry a "Huntsville" mailing address and sit in the county school system.
  • Alabama property taxes are low enough to change your housing budget. The median mortgaged household here pays about $1,405 a year in property tax; in the Austin metro it's about $7,403.

The questions people ask before they move here

Is Huntsville, Alabama a good place to live?

It depends on three things: whether your work is in the defence, space and engineering ecosystem, whether you need a specific school district, and whether a humid Southern summer and a car-dependent city suit you. We wrote the long version, including who should not move here.

The honest pros and cons

Where do most people live in Huntsville?

The west side — Madison, Harvest, Monrovia, Meridianville — for arsenal and Research Park jobs, because that is where the drive is shortest. The east and south — Five Points, Blossomwood, Hampton Cove, Owens Cross Roads — for downtown access, the hospital and more land.

What should I do first?

Run three numbers before you look at houses: the commute from the areas you are considering, the cost comparison against where you live now, and the rent-vs-buy model at your price. Then check the school zone for any specific address — the parcel decides the district, not the mailing address.

Read the moving guide

Is Huntsville cheaper than where I live now?

Usually on house prices and property tax — the median mortgaged household here pays about $1,405 a year in property tax. One caveat in the other direction: Alabama levies a state income tax, so movers from Tennessee, Texas, Florida or Washington take home less per dollar of salary.
