You can read the whole labour market here in one table: one enormous federal installation, a contractor ring built around it, a health system, an automotive manufacturing corridor, and a school-and-university layer. This is the Chamber's own 2026 list, grouped by sector, with what each cluster means for where you should look for a house.
Headcounts as published by the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber in its 2026 Leading Employers list, July 2026. One caution before you add them up: the Redstone Arsenal figure is the installation-wide workforce, so it overlaps the contractor numbers rather than sitting beside them — the table below is not a sum of separate jobs.
Five employers, and the reason the metro exists economically: the Army installation plus NASA Marshall, the FBI, the City of Huntsville and Madison County. Redstone alone is larger than every private employer on this list combined.
Eighteen firms — Northrop Grumman, Boeing, Leidos, SAIC, Lockheed Martin and a long tail of employee-owned and mid-size integrators (Torch, COLSA, Intuitive, MTSI, i3). This is the cluster that makes Huntsville unusual: it is not a branch office town, it is where the work is done.
Fourteen employers. Mazda Toyota and Toyota Alabama anchor the automotive corridor, Blue Origin and L3Harris the engine work, with PPG, Kohler, BASF, YKTA, ADTRAN and Sanmina supplying them. Shift patterns here drive very specific commute questions.
Two systems: Huntsville Hospital (12,508) and Crestwood Medical Center (1,501). The largest private-sector employer in the region, and a workforce that cannot be remote — so it anchors demand around the medical district.
Six employers: three school systems, UAH, Alabama A&M and Calhoun. Teaching and university jobs are the reason some buyers care about a specific district boundary rather than a general area.
Amazon and Target's distribution centres, Redstone Federal Credit Union, Huntsville Utilities, Phoenix, and the Space & Rocket Center — smaller individually, but they explain a lot of the shift-based commuting on the western and northern edges.

51 entries, 129,717 listed headcount — which, again, is not 129,717 distinct jobs, because the Redstone figure spans the installation rather than a single payroll.
Redstone Arsenal, at 45,500 people across the installation — Army organisations plus NASA Marshall (7,000), the FBI (2,200) and the contractor workforce that supports them. The largest single non-government employer is Huntsville Hospital at 12,508.
Yes, and in volume: 14,009 health-care jobs, 17,951 in manufacturing and aerospace, 10,169 in education, plus logistics, finance and utilities. Mazda Toyota alone is 4,000 people and has been hiring continuously since it opened.
For many contractor and federal roles you need to be eligible for one — which is a background process, not a credential you must already hold. A large share of roles at the hospital, schools, manufacturers and logistics sites require no clearance at all. Federal openings are posted on USAJOBS; contractors post their own.
Median household income is $86,499 in Madison County and $74,714 in Huntsville city (ACS 2024 5-year) — well above the national median. Individual pay varies enormously by sector, so we don't publish a single "average salary" figure for the city.
Whichever one you'll drive to at 7:40am. The single most useful thing you can do before choosing an area is measure your real route and start time — the commute calculator does it on live road routing, and the difference between two areas is often 20 minutes a day.
We link the Chamber's current list rather than forecast it — employer counts move every year and we would rather you read the primary source than our summary of a trend. What the list does show is a market with no single point of failure: federal, contractor, health, manufacturing and education are all large.
Tell us the employer or the work location and your start date. We'll send the areas that actually fit that commute, the school district that applies to each, and what the payment looks like at your price — and if you're PCSing, the VA-loan path instead.
